Dorothea Dix Dorothea Dix (1802-1887) Dorothea Dix was a prison reformer. She visited prisons and asylums. She noticed how badly the mentally ill were treated and how cramped the prisons were. She wanted to improve the harsh conditions. Dix brought up these issues and had helped improve these conditions of the mentally ill and prisoners.
Francis Lieber (1800-1872) Francis Lieberman had a part to play in the prison and asylum reform. He wanted to reduce the beatings of prisoners and reduce the sentences. He also wanted to separate the women and children and the ill people. He wanted to enforce the learning of reading. With his efforts, the movement that would improve conditions in prisons and asylums improved.
Dr. John Galt(1779-1839) John Galt was a Scottish author. He went to prison. He had written many works form there which helped to pay for his debt. Galt believed that the mentally ill should not be treated poorly. He believed that they had dignity.
Samuel Gridley Howe was born November 10, 1801 and died January 9, 1876. He was a nineteenth century United States physician, abolitionist, and an advance of education for the blind.
